APPLIED BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS

OSALC employs Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)—a research-backed and evidence-based approach to behavior modification—to help guide our students toward goal-oriented, socially appropriate behaviors. It takes into account how behaviors can be altered, how they’re influenced by one’s environment, and how behavioral learning takes place in individuals.

When tailoring a learning plan for an individual student, a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) is first utilized to identify the function of the maladaptive behaviors we often see. Whether the student is aware of it or not, behavior always serves a purpose, and we exert great effort to pinpoint the role particular behaviors are playing for particular students.

Another tool we use is the Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP). Developed through evidence-based practice, the student’s BIP targets the behaviors that are interfering with learning. BIPs include preventative strategies that help avert problem behaviors from occurring as well as methods to teach replacement behaviors that serve the same function, but lead to more pro-social, healthier outcomes.

Data forms the foundation upon which we make all decisions regarding each student’s treatment. Data is collected on behaviors targeted for both increase and decrease. This data provides accurate and specific information necessary to inform modifications to the BIP or continuation of the BIP.
